by Markus Wosgien (20.04.2009) 2009, Black Sabbath celebrate their 40th anniversary - somehow, it's also the birthday of Heavy Metal as we know it. To mark the jubilee, Universal Music rereleases some genuine gems of the genre, starting off with "Paranoid", the 1970 cult opus which is offered in a lush deluxe digipak with three CDs in it. First of all, of course, the original album containing eight songs - all of them have become true classics and will make the Rock fan cry: not only the title track (and evergreen) "Paranoid", but "War pigs", "Iron man", or "Hand of doom", too. The special thing about the rerelease: a) the rare quadrophonic mix done in 1974, and b) a third disc with alternative recordings of the eight jewels taken from a studio session on June 16 and 17, 1970. Most of it are instrumental versions, but "Paranoid" and "Planet caravan" have different lyrics from their officially released versions. The spirit of this milestone is still alive and unbelievably strong - a captivating experience, even today.
