Excellent Service

The pioneers of US-Prog Metal have already shed their style on their predecessor album. Leaving the old logo behind, they also got rid of some of their aggression. This calmer pace even emphasizes this masterpiece's quality. Terrific!

by Björn Thorsten Jaschinski (22.02.2010) The series of Fates Warning rereleases made with time, love and care is almost near perfection. 1991, vocalist Ray Alder had been accepted as John Artch's successor, and "Perfect symmetry" was another step towards less aggressive sounds (at least compared to "No exit"). The songs sound less intricate, often peppered with clean guitars and underlaying symphonic arrangements ("The eleventh hour"). According to drummer Mark Zonder, the new material is far more challenging for the musicians than the old one. Maybe Fates Warning, being the originators of US Prog Metal, wanted to get their share of the cake up-and-coming Dream Theater were offered? Be that as it may - there have never been any hard feelings between both bands, otherwise James LaBrie wouldn't have recorded the backing vocals for "Life in still water". Terry Brown's production and the usual, terrific Hugh Syme cover artwork, top off this package. Apart from the promo videos for "Eye to eye" and "Point of view", there's a second CD featuring 14 live and demo recordings.
