by Sonja Angerer (04.07.2007) Already on their debut EP, "Havestar", the quartet from Illinois stirred the attention with their catchy mixture of Industrial Metal and 80s-Synthiepop-melody-lines. Topped by the clear voice of singer Brittany who adds a wonderful warmth even to heavy riff-songs like "Translate" and "Bells". In "Machine vision", a dancefloor hit with EBM-rhythms heavily influenced by the early Depeche Mode, this combination is even better. Here, only in the chorus, the vocals are used without distortion creating a contrast that couldn't be bigger. Also nice: the sandy, dry "Ultravioletfly" with its reduced vocals, or "Silhouette", a nervous, very minimalist piece that permanently changes between idyll and threatening ruin. "Optics" is an extremely variable and very matured album - even more surprising that I:Scintilla is really a newcomer band. So it's not difficult to say that I: Scintilla should be looking into a bright future!
