by Oliver Kube (20.04.2009) Almost three years after "Of whales and woe", Primus boss Les Claypool presents us with his second solo album. Is there any predictability regarding the featured songs? Yes: they are unpredictable, that's predictable. "Amanitas", for example, is a wonderfully eccentric mixture of progressive and jazzy Rock sounds (King Crimson meets Frank Zappa), but you'll also hear a cool, oriental vibe... On "Booneville stomp", you'll once again notice Claypool's liking of his on/off collaborator Tom Waits: that song could have easily been on Waits' "Mute variations", or "Bone machine" if it weren't for Claypool's squawky voice. Totally wild'n'weird: "Bite out of life" with its Polka beat - Claypool is supported by Gogol Bordello fronter Eugene Hütz on that one: they make a great and crazy team! One can only hope that they'll work together again very soon. You see: brace yourself for anything when pressing the "start" button! But being a Claypool fan, you may already know this, I guess...
