Even though it gets tough again and again: on album number five of the kings of Progrock it's clearly calmer and more acoustic as before.

by Oliver Kube (24.07.2009) Mostly, the fifth album by The Mars Volta shows another side of the ex-At The Drive In members Omar Rodríguez-López and Cedric Bixler-Zavala. "Since we've been wrong", the opening track which is over 7 minutes long (seriously starting only at 1:40, though) already gives a hint: distinctly calmer moments, many of them acoustical, accompanied by Bixler-Zavala's mainly harmonious vocals. Ok, you still have "Cotopaxi" (reminding you once more of Led Zep's wilder moments), or Space Rock-y "Teflon" still shaking your book shelf, but yet, the highlight of this opus is one of the "softer" songs: airy, but well-focussed "Copernicus". This composition, full of Soul and psychedelic elements, truly unveils the breathtakingly atmospheric soundscape Rodríguez-López brilliantly constructed when producing this disc.
