5.Live in Philadelphia 1998
by Björn Thorsten Jaschinski (08.10.2007) After the John Arch-farewell monument, "Awaken the guardian", and excurses into the 90s, now "No exit" (1988) experiences its resurrection. Of course, provided with additional demo versions and a dvd full of clips and live-pictures. The striking, extremely symmetric and clinical artwork completely contradicted the former fantasy-motives. Still, Fates Warning hadn't reduced their metallic heaviness, yet: the calm intro, "No exit" is followed by the riff- and solo-dominated "Anarchy divine" like an inebriation. "Silent cries" and "In a word", ballad-like in the verses, are short statements in which Ray Alder greatly varies his high voice. Striking parallel to the German newcomer Michael Kiske in Helloween: the weird vocal lines and the conscious non-commercial flair – driven to the top in the party Thrashy (!) "Shades of heavenly death" and the 7-piece epic, "The ivory gate of dreams" (the blueprint for Dream Theaters "A change of seasons"). A timeless masterpiece of composition-finesse and artistic virtuosity.
