    So Far Gone

by Ralf Koch (20.04.2009) He's a guitar-loving keyboardist: that's why Derek Sherinian's solo albums never sound "keyboardsey" (that is: electronic) but always organic and focussed on the band. After his stints with Kiss, Alice Cooper and Dream Theater, he's the one on top of this bill now, but this time, the result of it is very much influenced by his fellow musicians (among others, Zakk Wylde, Tony Franklin, Virgil Donati): for starters, the new songs have a different rhythm because it's not Simon Philips wielding the sticks as usual, but Metal drummer Brian Tichy (Ozzy e.a.), so there's no more of that Jazz and Fusion sound of the older releases. "Molecular heinosity" is top-notch versatile Prog Metal and meets all expectations you perhaps have. And the songwriter in Sherinian is also very modest on this one: the opening song, 16 minutes long, is written by Donati!
