by Marcel Anders (24.01.2006) The two new songs on the recent compilation, “Once more with feeling“ didn't let me expect big things: “Protégé moi“ and “Twenty years“ were calm, electronic songs in which Placebo for the first time did without guitars. Furthermore, the trio hired producer Dimitri Tikovoi, an expert for spherical computer sounds. But: surprisingly enough, the result is quite rocky. After all, “Meds” reminds me of the naive beginnings of the band when Brian Molko & co. didn't hide their love for The Cure, Sonic Youth and My Bloody Valentine. The same ingredients can be found on this new album. Like in the opener, a beautiful rocky duet with the befriended The Kills, in the punky “Don't give up on a dream“ or in the edgy “I drag behind“. Songs that are as fast paced and energetic as once “Nancy boy“ or “Bruise pristine“. On the other side you get half a dozen of songs that rather tend towards the calmer, melancholic direction. With gloomy atmospheres, synthetic soundscapes, slow piano and discreet industrial elements.
