by Markus Eck (29.01.2009) It's really fascinating: although there are already legions of Black Metal hordes roaming the streets (a lot of them just mere amateurs), there's still an abundance of talented bands. Among them: these Japanese blokes (who pledged their allegiance to Black Metal in 1991), now delivering their debut album "Lunar eclipse, chaos to the ruin". Cataplexy are genuine occultists - they battle the plastic culture and big city lights of their hometown Osaka with evil and hefty song material. Apart from gloomy guitar sounds and an array of gloriously speedy rhythm sequences, singer Koshiro Matsuo is impressively tantalizing his throat, torturing his vocal cords until the bitter end... The quartet reigns supreme in the following disciplines: intensity, precision, and musicality. Alls that leads to this wonderful mixture of traditional Scandinavian stuff and a decent helping of originality.
