12.Pulling the String
by Marcel Anders (April 2005) The fourth album of the nu metal band from Peoria, Illinois, is either a big disappointment or the reason for greatest cheers. On the one hand, you could claim that the quartet musically stood still and simply missed the jump. Simply because they still celebrate this angry, frontal nu metal with fat guitar, fierce scream vocals and blasting double bass drum. Slipknot or Static X send their greetings. On the other side one could call this continuity. Because while the competitors have long changed to softer tunes or split up, Chad Gray, Greg Tribbett, Ryan Martinie and Matt McDonough remain faithful - they are straight, uncompromising and they are heavy! In Mudvayne, everything is one unit, technically perfect, following a clear line, yet, over the course of 12 tracks and 50 minutes also a bit one-sided and monotonous. Only in "Happy", they shortly present themselves melodic, harmonic and calm. But that was enough of pop commerce for this album. If you like the full energetic swipe - this is your album!
