by Matthias Mader (22.10.2008) In 1985, the debut album of Exodus was finally released, after a delay of more than a year. Musically, "Bonded by blood" was even better than the debuts delivered by Metallica ("Kill ’em all") and Slayer ("Show no mercy"). If you try to re-record such an opus after 23 years, you can’t but lose, but Exodus handle the task quite gracefully. Evergreens like "And then there were none" and "No love" reach a new level due to the versatility and craftsmanship of Lee Altus who is one of the most underestimated axemen of the Bay Area. Compared to the original, the sound is now more voluminous and more transparent in Andy Sneap’s mix. The screechy voice and the attitude of new singer Rob Dukes, though, could be the only bone of contention for dyed-in-the-wool Exodus fanatics. But there was only one Paul Baloff, and he won’t rise from his grave…
