by Oliver Kube (24.07.2009) Almost unbelievable: the last regular Rancid album "Indestructible" was released six years ago. They have always had many copycats in the Punk Rock genre - and yet, in spite of this long studio break, the Californians still seemed to be somehow present. This break seems to have done them some good indeed. On their seventh output, the boys around masterminds Tim Armstrong and Lars Fredriksen (plus new drummer Branden Steineckert, ex-The Used) are on top of their game. The nineteen tracks, produced by Bad Religion's Brett Gurewitz, are a perfect, impressive, and versatile mix of all Rancid assets. Relentlessly pumping monsters à la "Damnation" or "This place", great melodic stuff like "New Orleans", Ska-based, swinging "Up to no good", and, to mention a last one, the acoustic ballad "Civilian ways" which seems to be a drinking anthem, but turns out to be a thoughtful and intelligent song - you get 46 extremely entertaining minutes once this CD is in your player!
