by Jürgen Tschamler (29.01.2009) In Spain, Mägo De Oz are one of the most influential bands with a huge following, not only in their genre. With their humongous list of album releases, they have reached a lot of people internationally, too. Their style is very versatile and best described with the term Medieval / folklore Metal. By now, the band consists of ten musicians - on their latest release "La ciudad de los arboles", they have once again recorded 13 songs packed with all their trademarks: beautiful classic melodies, crispy guitars, and the signature Medieval touch. This doesn’t necessarily lead to melancholic sounds - the tracks always have a positive, cheery appeal. Synthesisers, violins, flutes, and guitars make a merry mixture, supported by the Spanish vocals - very unique. The Spanish also deliver a brilliant cover of Queen`s "39" which is a bit confusing at the beginning (partially because they renamed the song - or would you recognise "No queda sino batirnos"?). "La ciudad de los arboles" is another great musical statement of an exceptional band - if you like Medieval Metal, you should definitely check them out.
