by Markus Wosgien (29.01.2009) Black Metal is sometimes not only war, but also art - which should be a well-known fact now. The Icelanders Sólstafir are an epitome of that, the label "Black Metal" being not really enough for the quartet’s spectrum, but at least defining their roots. The eight tracks on their third full-length release are Doom-cold, progressive and have a certain hippie appeal. The musicians play themselves into a frenzy like they’re on drugs, and this makes for an incredibly intense atmosphere. Whining guitars with Black Sabbath flair, intertwined with that Nordic cold, the tristesse of Anathema’s sound, and the emotional intensity of the early Black Metal works of some Norwegian legends, result in a fascinating cocktail of an almost scary magnetism. Together with the wailing vocals of Aðalbjörn Tryggvason, this transforms "Köld" into a unique and perfect gem. Amazing!
