by Oliver Kube (01.10.2007) If you've seen a Pearl Jam show in the last years, you might know what to expect on Eddie Vedder's first solo album. Similarly like his acoustic solo spots before the shows of his band, also this CD is a little, intimate matter, not the big Rock thing that he uses to do with his four colleagues. The closest to a typical Pearl Jam song would be "Far behind". For the rest, the 42-year-old American delivers predominantly calm, thoughtful songs, like the wonderful "No ceiling", the dreamy "Rise", and the wall of sound hymn, "Hard Sun". The latter is Vedder's emotional interpretation of a composition of the in Europe still unknown, Canadian Alternative-Singer/Songwriter, Indio. Background for the decision to record this solo attempt was the film of the same title of Oscar-winner, Sean Penn, ("Mystic river"). He personally asked his friend, Vedder, to write songs for his movie. But his music works perfectly without the moving pictures, too.
