by Jerry Ewing (01.10.2010) Opeth’s 20th anniversary was certainly cause for celebration for the band, but for the fans it’s proved to be a treat beyond belief. For the band it was taking their seminal 2001 release Blackwater Park and a set that comprised of the best of every other album, from 1995’s Orchid all the way to 2008’s Watershed, around some of the most prestigious venues around the world. For the UK, that meant London’s celebrated Royal Albert Hall. The fact that Mikael Åkerfeldt’s heroes Camel and Deep Purple had performed there in the 70s had not gone unnoticed either, with Opeth replicating the latter’s 1970 album cover Concerto For Group And Orchestra, even sitting in the very same seats for the cover of this DVD. As for what’s inside, it matters not whether you get the five-disc set (two DVDs and three CDs) or the super deluxe everything but the kitchen sink version, the performance on DVD is as spellbinding as it was on the night in question. With Blackwater Park taking up the entire first disc (along with a lengthy Mikael interview) and the chronological run through of the back catalogue the second (plus a behind-the-scenes documentary), highlights are many. In fact when faced with the likes of The Moor, The Drapery Falls, Harlequin Forest, Dirge For November and more, all from a band still at the very top of their game, what have you got to complain about? Answer: nothing whatsoever!
