The stylistic dividing line between Dimmu Borgir and Old Mans Child has never been really clear, that's why an early MCD of one and the demo of the other were nicely suited on a split c.d.. We will have to wait and see if Galder after this farewell album of his own baby now goes on more self-destructively than Hypocrisy. Apart from the missing orchestral company, the spiritual brotherhood with the even more successful neighbours is even more obvious by the choice of musical elements and the collaboration with their drummer Nicholas Barker. A very own note in midst of the inferno of keyboard oriented Gothic (Black) Metal reminiscences, aggressive Thrash parts and traditional Metal riffing is provided by Galder¦s liking of folklore-like acoustic guitars ("In quest of enigmatic dreams"), as well as the hoarse vocals. Anyway, "In defiance of existence" is a perfect title for this rich, last meal. (Eugen Legat - 01/03)
