13.Dirty little secret
by Marcel Anders (September 2005) A new Bon Jovi album is like a product from the famous American fastfood chains: the cover changes but the content is always the same. Almost always because this time, the New Jersey rockers in fact managed to bring in some changes. Beginning with producer John Shanks, who used to works with Melissa Etheridge and Sheryl Crow bringing in some unusually heavy guitars and a powerful-dynamic sound. Also the lyrics, in which Jon - frustrated about the re-election of George W. Bush - finds some clear words. Already in the opener, he presents himself as a man with a mission: "We're living in the broken home of hopes and dreams". The 43 year old family father takes up the role of a system critic and seems to enjoy it so much that he takes up this approaoch again and again. In the twelve songs, he laments about the decline of custom and morals, condemns the Iraq War and criticises the money orientation of the music-industry. "Keep your pseudo-punk, HipHop, Pop Rock-junk, and your digital downloads." Hard but true words. Of course, rounded off by the obligatory ballad, ("I Am") as well as pure mainstream ("One last cigarette") - that's where they still remain typically Bon Jovi. (Marcel Anders - October 2005)
