Excellent Service

"Gateways To Annihilation" shows a much settled alliance with Steve Tucker, compared to its predecessor - and the sound is much more powerful too. For the last time Eric Rutan is involved as guitarist for 'Morbid Angel'. Death metal at it's finest!

by Eugen Legat (10/00) Claiming to be the most extreme example in the chaos of a storming developing Death Metal band has vanished already with the release of "Blessed are the sick", even if the press criticised the band for that. In contrast to numerous other bands of the good ol'days, Morbid Angel have always understood how to show their rooted affiliation to this genre and how to express this on all their albums without being caged. Just in time for the big Christmas sales they again face the concurrence of Incantation, Nile and Krisiun, knowing they still don't have to fear this concurrence. Even if some of the slower parts remind me of Gorefest's "False", and even if "Secured limitations" by characteristic riffing and variable singing lets Carcass's breeze of decay disappear, each composition is solidly singular and identifiable alone by Sandoval's drumming and the clear-cut voice of the guitars of Azagtoth/Rutan.
