by Matthias Mader (03.01.2008) Well, the Canadians have always been a little crazy – just think of Rush and, e.g. VoiVod. Protest The Hero from Whitby, Ontario set forth this list as they are equally influenced by Metal, Progressive and Post-Hardcore. Which can be heard on their new album, "Fortress": the ten songs, divided like an opera into three individual acts, tear down all musical (and ideological) borders. This is made clear already by the first three songs of the first act, called "On conquest and capture": settled in hell-like high speed-regions, one break follows the other, the vocals are classic Heavy Metal somewhere between Michael Kiske and Bruce Dickinson, while the song structures follow neo-progressive patterns. The Canadians enter new, musical grounds and deliver honourable pioneering work that hopefully will pay off commercially, too. Protest The Hero are the missing link between Watchtower, Dream Theater and The Dillinger Escape Plan.
