by Björn Thorsten Jaschinski (20.04.2009) About time for these Swiss blokes to leave the shadow of Gotthard behind. They constantly release Hard Rock monuments - others, like Crystal Ball, have given up by now. Well, maybe "Everest" is a declaration of independence, after all. Even Shakra don't sound as rough'n'tough as years ago, but they could still make a motorcycle gang's clubhouse vibrate with appreciative clapping for sure. The choruses are apt for Rock and Metal both, but many riffs are genuine Metal and fit for a band like, say, Accept. "The illusion of reality" combines crisp and juicy verses with an epic chorus, so both ends meet very agreeable. Of course, there's the mandatory ballad, too, adequately presented with "Why". Shakra prove that some slight alterations are enough to sound up-to-date, even in a very traditional genre. And classy songwriting is timeless, anyway.
