by Andreas Reissnauer (01/02) Hats off! Unbelievable, how young this band is and how mature their song material is on this debut. Ensiferum come from the talent forge Finland and should soon be jumping in the footsteps of Children Of Bodom. There are some parallels between those two bands. Like their fellow citizens, Ensiferum feature fast and melodic guitars, however, they are much more variable. We get some folk-influences beside fast riffs reminding me of 80s-Metal Ó la Running Wild. One could surely also call "Ensiferum" melodic Death Metal, too, but you couldn't compare their music to the fierceness of this style. The contrary is the case: due to the folk cites, the music is almost happy, yet still powerful and aggressive. The technical abilities are undoubted and the production is very well done. If you prefer bands like Children Of Bodom and alike, you should love this album!
