by Jürgen Tschamler (01/02) For insiders, Sonata Arctica are the new sensation from Finland, heavily competing with their country-fellows Stratovarius. Because "Ecliptica" in many parts sounds like the early Stratovarius about 6-8 years ago. Great melodies, clear vocals, classical solo-parts and perfectly placed keyboards convince from the first second on, no doubt about that. And with "Blank file" and "My land", they open with two killers immediately underpin the level of the band. The driving "8th commander" could easily be of Stratovarius, too. With only one guitarist, they beat the rest, this guy can really play! Tony Kakko's vocals convince, too. And you have to consider the average age of these guys is below 20!!! The songwriting is like the textbook for hymns. Unfortunately, they didn't forget the obligatory ballad. I could have done without one and wished for a killer like "Destruction preventer", "Kingdom for a heart" or "Unopend" instead. Sonata Arctica will make it difficult for some of the established bands, a great album of these talented newcomers.
