by Björn Thorsten Jaschinski (29.09.2006) Many early fans think of "Inside out" (1994) as the last true album of the band. Ray Alder had established as a singer and with his unique, but variable voice settled in their hearts. The differences to "Parallels" are little, the songs apart of the fantastic drumming of Mark Zonder are rather progressive on a subliminal level. Commercial is the wrong word, but the accents are clearly on the quieter moments. Highlight: "Monument" (also performed on "Still life") and especially "Outside looking in". Six years later the band is hardly the same anymore: beside Ray, only founding member Jim Matheos is part of it - and he suddenly does completely without guitar solos. Instead, guest musician on keyboards, ex-Dream Theater Kevin Moore, provides some cold, almost technoid atmospheres. Framed by the two "Disconnected"-parts you get minimalistic, sometimes spherical songs, sometimes songs ironed by staccato riffs as well as the extended "Still remains" in the middle. The double album contains some demo versions and a previously unreleased cover of The Church!
