At least externally, The Grape in Ventura, California appears to be just another anonymous building in a row of restaurants and shops. But in the summer of 2022, this attractive live venue would host the long-awaited live debut of an impressive partnership in the progressive metal/jazz fusion world. On the right side of the stage was Derek Sherinian, deeply immersed in heartfelt concentration as he delivered his captivating keyboard parts with elegant mastery. On the left side of the stage, almost lost behind his equipment, sat renowned drummer Simon Phillips, whose hypnotic, pounding sticks occasionally became visible between cymbals and toms. This impeccable partnership was supported by the masterful bass of Ric Fierabracci, while the relentless, playful double-neck guitar of Ron 'Bumblefoot' Thal added another melodic touch. With a performance in front of 500 enthusiastic fans, the uninitiated passerby would never suspect that this was a live music union that had been decades in the making.
