by Patrick Schmidt (07/03) The new Dimmu Borgir album represents the expected progression to the predecessor "Puritanical euphoric misanthropia" and is the by far most orchestral piece in band history. The already bombastic Death Metal is toped off by the Prag philharmonic. "Progenies of the great apocalypse" is simply breathtakingly well arranged, melting raging speedmetal into the sinister nightmare soundtrack. Nevertheless, the devoted Dimmu Borgir fan won't be missing the typical Nick Barker-Blast Beats verzichten. Despite the closeness to classical music, Shagrath and friiends are still aggressive and fast as hell. The arrangements are great all the same and filled with small details. Fortunately, the drums don't thumb as heavily as they used to and do not dominate the sound any more. The overall sound is actually pretty homogeneous, bombastic and reachable. "Death cult armageddon" confirm Borgir's reign of the Black Metal empire and it does not look like anybody can bring them down any time soon. It's not mere music, it's art.
