10.Hail and farewell to britain
by Michael Rother (18.01.2007) For four long years, the fan had to wait for a new album. With a new label, new logo on the cover and 10 monster tracks, the band now returns with a blast. Already after the first listening, it is clear that this album is a true killer! The tough, undecided Doom escapades of the last records have been reduced, and on "Dead again" only serve as intros or for the sake of a higher tension. As a whole, the songs are very straight, cleaned up and extremely variable. The potential of a song, like "She burnt me down" is used for whole albums by other bands. The heaviness of "Slow deep and hard" may only rarely be reached but when in "Some stupid tomorrow", they even get out the Carnivore-leg, it is clear that Type O Negative are on the right track and despite catchy melodies present themselves gloomy and threatening. The green monster is omnipresent and on "Dead again" turns out to be the wolf in sheep's clothing. Casual loans of "Bloody kisses" can be heard as well as the liking to speed it up to Punk levels or Hardcore aggressiveness. Especially the variable vocals of Peter Steel let the ten songs sound fresh and refreshing, and when in "Halloween in Heaven" Kenny is further assisted by another female guest voice, the fan is completely (positively) surprised. The album doesn't become boring after many times of listening because there is always something new to discover and the created moods of songs, like "The profits of doom" and "September Sun" (incl. piano-intro!) is just something you have to experience yourself. On "Dead again", Type O Negative are at their very best and I'm very likely to simply re-call it "Back again"!
