by Michael Rother (April 2004) The most important information up front: while the band with their album "Grand declaration of war" released 4 years ago delivered rather experimental sounds, leading the Mayhem sound to the limits, "Chimera" is more traditional and less abstract again. The four went back to their strengths, the songs are extremely fierce, mysterious and apocalyptic. Striking is the unbelievable drumming of Hellhammer paired with Blasphemer's thrilling guitars and the extremely variable vocals of Maniac's, either hateful, aggressive or in threatening speech vocals. Als if the pace is skilfully varied and fine technical extras are incorporated in the sound, the motto of the 8 tracks is extreme metal with full speed attitude. The break pedal is hardly used at all, only exception is the predominantly mid-tempo ridden title track, melodic and fierce at the same time. Fans of Mayhem as well as all fans of black metal will be relieved about the regained strength of the band. (Michael Rother - April 2004)
