by Marcel Anders (04.10.2006) Tool, Slayer and Pearl Jam: they are all fans of the Atlanta based quartet Mastodon, now delivering their third album, "Blood mountain". And what a killer that is: a 70-minute bastard of Hardcore, Punk, Metal and pure Prog Rock. Already the opener "The wolf is loose" gives an insight into what's about to expect in the 12 songs: a heavy piece of Metal with angry scream vocals, sharp staccato guitars, Jazz-like drums and permanent style and time changes. As remarkable as this opener is the combination of tribal drums and martial Slayer-riffing in "Crystal skull" and the epic Progressive-thunderstorm in "Capillarian crest". Here, Mastodon is as intricate and complex as King Crimson or Tool - only to set out for the slaughter feast in the next moment. An approach that they keep up all through the album, in between they present a psychedelic 70s-rock highlight in best Led Zep manner, in the "hidden track" they present a crazy speech of Josh Homme (Q.O.T.S.A.).
