    Black Gives Way To Blue

by Oliver Kube (30.10.2009) Seven years ago, their vocalist Layne Staley died after years of drug abuse. 14 years ago, the Grunge giants released their last album. Fans of the legendary Seattle outfit had long given up all hopes for a reformation of their heroes. But - lo and behold! - they're here again. And after a few beats of "A looking in view", it's obvious that this is still the band which was loved by millions of Grungies in the 90s: Jerry Cantrell's overwhelming guitar barrage, drummer Sean Kinney's irresistible beat, Mike Inez' intense and pumping bass - and the overall epic, atmospheric air created by all these ingredients. And - what's with the new bloke at the mike? William DuVall (who is also the singer of Comes With The Fall) is more than a mere ersatz for Lane Staley: he never tries to copy the original, but is confident, just himself - in calmer moments (check "Your decision") or on the title track which is dedicated to Staley, though, his voice does remind you of his famous predecessor.
