by Oliver Kube (08.10.2007) The changing between aggressive screams and melodic vocals on "Avenged Sevenfold" really reminds me of Linkin Park – especially in the raging opener, "Critical acclaim", only that this song is x times as heavy than Linkin Park's complete last album, that they didn't incorporate any Rap parts and that both singing styles are performed by Matt Shadows alone. Also the rest of the self-produced, fourth album of the Californians turns out to be very impressive. Their double-guitar-parts still reminiscent of the classic Iron Maiden in songs, like "Afterlife" and "Lost" are razor sharp and represent the sharp counterpart to the either highspeed fast or powerfully grooving rhythms. And at the same time, A7X have plenty of true hit candidates in store, too: the driving forward, anthemnic "Scream", e.g., the melodic, and yet, heavily rocking "Brompton Cocktail", and, of course, the closing, six and a half minute long, heavily Country-influenced ballad, "Dear God". The latter can easily compete with the best Guns N'Roses epics. Compliment!
