9.Kissing The Beehive
by Oliver Kube (14.07.2008) On their second album, the Canadian indie outfit yet again presents a well done mixture of art pop inspired by new wave forerunners like Roxy Music, The Velvet Underground or David Bowie plus roots- and americana-drenched rock sounds. Since their fantastic debut "Apologies to the queen mary", three years have passed. And both main song writers, Spencer Krug and Dan Broeckner were busy with various solo or side projects (Sunset Rubdown, Swan Lake, Handsome Furs). In spite of this, the quintet demonstrates that they can easily kep up the high standard of the first album - they even surpass it here and there. Melancholic, but yet brimming with energetic and punk-laden moments - check out tracks like "California dreamer" or "Bang your drum" - dominate an emotional, very thoughtful but never boring opus. The glorious climax, and, at the same time, end: the eleven minutes long "Kissing the beehive" - store it right between The Mars Volta and Modest Mouse.
