by Björn Thorsten Jaschinski (20.04.2009) It would have been a real shame if these Texan masters of mystical occult Speed Metal had gone to the dogs after their magnum opus "Tara"... But drum whiz Proscriptor has simply recruited a whole new crew after not getting the Slayer stint and also not being with Melechesh any more. "Absu" is written on the cover - and what you get is 1000% of it: intricate riffing, piercing vocals, mighty leads and diabolic keyboard parts do absolutely remind you of the last four outputs, but this is one step closer to perfection. Which doesn’t mean that a fan of a little less complex combo like, say, Desaster, would shun Absu, them being kindred spirits anyway... Proscriptor wants to offer an album sailing along the 70s Prog Rock coasts, and "Nunbarshegunu" with its organ-laden sound makes that strikingly clear. If your concept of the term Black Metal is not too narrow, this could be considered as one of the top runners for album of the year in that genre already.
