Samael fronter Vorphalack announced well before the release of their new satanic work "Above" that the band would go back to their roots and deliver a genuine Metal opus. What he didn’t tell us, though, is that this is the most brutal, fastest and most extreme Samael album so far. The opener "Under the flag" blows you away, leaving you devastated, and you feel reminded of milestones such as "Blood ritual", "Ceremony of opposites", and "Passage" - "Above" being the acme of all these . Keyboards are used rarely, but effectively and make for the adequate chills, while Vorphalack’s voice drenches the ten terrific tracks with satanic fervour: the whole time, you’ll feel like you’re in purgatory. "Above" is - apart from the mentioned classics - the best Samael release ever. Nuff said.
