Pure melancholia is what the title of the sixth 'Anathema' album suggests. "A Fine Day To Exit" was produced by Nick Griffiths (Pink Floyd, Roger Waters) and amazes with incredibly dense, spherical alternative rock.

by Sonja Angerer (null) In their 11th year of existence, the Liverpool based band have delivered a true masterpiece: they have never been as indifferent and epic before. And we've never experienced them so soft as in "Pressure", neither. One could almost think to listen to a Radiohead song. In "Release" and "Looking Out Inside", the guitars move up front a bit more, in the manic "Panic", they reach a thrilling intensity that looks for equals. despite the negative title, "A Fine Day To Exit" appears extremely melancholic, but never gloomy or depressive. Sometimes, one thinks to see hope in all that despair, like in "Underworld" with it's mood that reminds me a bit of Placebo. Produced by Nick Griffith (e.g. Roger Waters), this album is mush closer to Pink Floyd, Tiamat's "A Deeper Kind Of Slumber" or Marillion's "Brave" than to the band's own black metallic roots. Which ain't the worst thing, for sure. Because if you've heard the flute-dominated title-track, you know that also calm tunes can break hearts.
