Deadpool

is definitely one. With his red and black outfit (‘Well, that’s so bad guys can’t see me bleed’), mask and weapons, he’s got to be one of the most unusual characters in the Marvel universe. After all, which other hero comes out with such coarse wisecracks, speaks directly to the audience and suffers from a clear personality disorder?

His big mouth often gets him into some sticky situations, but his excellent fighting skills usually manage to get him back out again. The anti-hero had his first film appearance in Origins: X-Men Wolverine, and was so popular that in 2016 he finally got his own film!

It’s never completely clear which side the red and black Marvel character is on. The main character in the comic series is Wade Wilson (played by Ryan Reynolds), a former member of a Special Forces unit who now makes a (rather dangerous) living as a mercenary.

This dangerous lifestyle explains why the mercenaries like to place bets in their favourite bar about which of their colleagues will be the next to not survive a mission. They call this list ‘Deadpool’. It’s in this bar that Wilson falls in love with Vanessa, an escort. Shortly after their relationship becomes serious enough that he proposes to her, Wilson becomes ill. His diagnosis – incurable cancer. Until then, everything had seemed to be going perfectly for Wilson, but that’s life – unpredictable, and sometimes even brutal.

In the same bar, Wilson meets a rather shady man who promises to heal him, even though the doctors have said there’s no hope. In his despair, Wilson accepts the offer, not wanting to become a burden on his fiancée. Without telling anyone, Wilson disappears overnight to seek his salvation in a secret research laboratory. But instead of a conventional treatment he’s instead subjected to all kinds of experiments by the sadistic laboratory manager Francis.

From Wade Wilson to a cynical mutant

But the ordeal has a goal: to activate Wilson’s mutant genes. After days of torture, it works. Wilson transforms, developing incredible healing powers. But there’s a side effect: his whole body is disfigured – as if an avocado had sex with an older, more disgusting avocado. No one had warned him that he would become a monster!

Driven by rage, he sets the lab on fire and flees. Looking the way he does, he can no longer return to Vanessa. Instead he pursues a vendetta against anyone who had anything to do with the experimental laboratory. He gives himself the name Deadpool and fights to regain his former appearance, not knowing whether or not Francis managed to escape the burning lab…

Together with the X-Men Negasonic and Colossus, Wilson seeks revenge. When Vanessa is kidnapped, it’s the final straw. Everyone who stands in Wilson’s way will be destroyed – and to be honest, who can blame him?
