Surely you still know the curious, blonde girl from the bedtime stories of your childhood. Lewis Carroll's children's book was first published in 1865 and is about the protagonist Alice, who one day discovers a talking white rabbit and decides to follow it into its burrow. There she falls into a hole - deeper and deeper underground until she finds herself in a surreal world full of abstruseness.

The story of Alice in Wonderland has thrilled entire generations not only because of its peculiar characters. The satirical depiction of social customs of the time and the absurd behaviour of the Wunderland inhabitants still enchant children and adults alike today.

Characters such as the Cheshire Cat or the Mad Hatter take young and old into a fascinating world in which it is possible to shrink to the size of a mouse or grow into the sky. There are delicious cakes for non-birthdays and unsolvable puzzles at crazy tea parties.

With so much imagination, it is hardly surprising that Lewis Carroll's novella was followed by adaptations for theatre, series and feature films. The Disney version from 1951 is probably one of the most famous. There are also songs in pop culture that have allusions to Alice in Wonderland. Today, the fictional story is cult and Alice in Wonderland jewellery collections enjoy great popularity.

The theme of time plays a major role in the Alice world and thus the clock symbol has a special meaning. This becomes clear at the beginning of the Alice in Wonderland story, when the rabbit, "driven" by time, frantically points to the clock and hurries away. At the Hatter's tea party, too, people complain about the inconveniences of the time.
