Whoa, whoa, whoa – hold your horses, EMP have got plenty of cowboy boots to go around…

History of the cowboy boot

Cowboy and western-inspired boots have been around for hundreds of years. Originally donned as a horse-riding boot, cowboy boots can be traced back to the 1800s in America’s mid-west. They were purely functional to begin with - used as a means of keeping a rancher’s foot anchored in riding stirrups for grip and protection, cowboy boots featured a small, stacked heel to prevent slippage, while decorative stitching would help the leather maintain its shape.

How the cowboy boot became a fashion favourite

While they're historically associated with rough and rugged ranchers, wranglers, and the rural cowboy, it’s undeniable that cowboy boots have earned themselves a spot in the shoe cupboard of even the most urban of urban cowboys nowadays.

One of the factors which makes the cowboy boot so popular could be the way it has been claimed – and then reimagined – as a symbol. Some items of clothing come to ‘represent’ more than what they are – think of the skinny jean as the outfit of the 2000s emo kids, orhow Vans trainers became the go to boot for street style.

The cowboy boot has evolved once more and is now making traction in the fashion world as a kind of modified, vintage-inspired boot playing with the idea of America’s past meeting the counterculture of the present. From harness boots making its way down runways to Lil Nas X’s neon Versace cowboy look at the Grammys, Americana, Route 66 and the old American Dream has found a new audience who are claiming it their way.

How to style cowboy boots

Another reason why cowboy boots have remained popular is their versatility. They look great if you're going for a modern cowboy vibe with jeans or blue denim and a plaid flannel, but they also pair well with dresses, skirts, and tons of other pieces that you’ll already have in your wardrobe.

The selection of Cowboy boots from EMP include everything you’ve come to expect – offering durable leather cowboy boots with features that make them suitable for everyday life, like zips and cushioned insoles. However, there’s a new sheriff in town when it comes to setting the tone for trends and styles. Never one to stick to the norm, EMP’s cowboy boots play with colours, styles and prints to offer a cowboy boot like no other.

From exclusive cowboy boots sold only at EMP – including pairs with all-over lightning bolt prints or donning the signature AC/DC print for die-hard fans of the classic band – to ombre colour boots and boots with fringe, our cowboy boots are for people who aren’t afraid of taking a walk on the wild side of fashion.
