Capes

If there was a medal for garments that are extremely practical, chic, comfortable and versatile, the cape would definitely be a firm favourite. Want to look good without much effort? Throw a poncho over your shoulders and confidently go out into the world! The question of what should be worn underneath is unnecessary, which is ideal if you don't have much desire to worry about which top to wear today.

Anyone who sees the poncho as a temporary solution is wrong. In fact, a cape coat looks extraordinarily chic. Not feeling your best, most-confident self? The problem of whether something will pinch here or there is also resolved by a stylish cape.

What do Greek priestesses, Sparta and Superman have in common?

How practical this garment is can be seen by how long it’s been with us. Capes have been extremely popular since ancient times. From there they made the jump to Rome, where men and women appreciated the advantages of the practical design. They were even used in Sparta to attractively wrap women's bodies. However, even though we don’t shout "That's Sparta!" today, we still encounter the poncho across society. High society women wear them as do pagans, goths and rockers - even Superman has one.

Capes are fashionable, cool and ... medieval?

In most cases, a cape coat is cut wide and hides everything you may not want to show. For example, you could choose to only wear a bra underneath. Have you gained a little tummy roll from all the Christmas cookies? No problem: Everything disappears under a poncho, which can flatter your figure. Due to its universal look, it’s also difficult to assign this item to a particular fashion direction. If it’s a cape with a hood, an impressive transformation can be achieved: once pulled over the head, the wearer is enchanted back into the Middle Ages. People will have to find out for themselves whether you are the brave daughter of the sword master or a powerful sorceress. Provided you are ready to reveal your secret!

Big brands and designers have been coming up with new ideas to make ponchos even more individual for millennia. Someone even came up with the idea of fringing them. It’s not known whether this was a deliberate idea or the result of a fight with a bear that eventually created the design. What is certain is that fringe capes are really very popular these days. For some this reminds them of an american indian style, others call it “ultimate elegance”. Whatever your view you can’t argue about the understated style of this item.

Men also wear capes!

In addition to proud Spartans, priestesses (and all other women), men have also always had a penchant for ponchos. Unforgettable: Clint Eastwood, wore a poncho in so many westerns that it became a symbol for tough guys - not just the poncho, of course, Clint Eastwood did as well! Today it’s Daryl Dixon who shows the bad guys in "The Walking Dead", where the poncho ... er, hangs the hammer. Presumably, heroines and heroes will still carry a cape in 200 years time. And look damn good at the same time. In films, just like in real life.
