We know they say ‘it’s grim up north’ but Joy Division really took that thought and ran with it. The gloomy quartet from Manchester had a short run that left a long-lasting impact on the music scene as we know it.
There’s a beautiful irony in the legacy left behind by a band like Joy Division – their art was so focused on the destructions of things (Love Will Tear Us Apart and Disorder are their two biggest hits, after all) but they created something everlasting. The proof of their enduring hold? All of the Joy Division t-shirts and tops available from EMP. Because fans – new and long-term, young and old – are constantly discovering and rediscovering the genius that was Ian Curtis, Bernard Sumner, Peter Hook and Stephen Morris.
Formed in the wake of the punk explosion in England, Joy Division were different in that they swapped rioting for restraint, uncovering the power in introspection and sadness. Today, we still feel their inspiration in the likes of The National, Lorde, Lana del Rey and The Cure. It was quite a rock and roll act in itself to turn rock upside down and take a more navel gazing approach, but it obviously connected with millions all over the world – and continues to do so. This is why Joy Division are just as relevant today, even if it was all over just as fast as it started. Ian Curtis was found hanged when the band was reaching a new peak, proving that outward success doesn’t really mean all that much in the end.
The band had made a pact that Joy Division would cease to exist if any member left, for any reason. So, instead, the group formed a new band – New Order. New Order would continue the legacy of Curtis and the rest, giving rock fans a different sound.
Our Joy Division t-shirts keep the band front and centre. The selection of Joy Division t-shirts include designs inspired by the iconic Unknown Pleasures album artwork. Joy Division's debut album, Unknown Pleasures, was recorded in April 1979 and created the Joy Division sound that so many have tried to recreate. The album cover was designed by Peter Saville, who went on to provide artwork for future Joy Division and New Order releases.
Other Joy Division t-shirts include designs inspired by imagery from other chapters in the band’s history, including the A Means to an End song.
