Deftones – Pioneers of modern Alternative Metal

It all began in the late 1980s. Chino Moreno, Stephen Carpenter and Frank Delgado met in the school playground, where, alongside skateboarding, they discovered a shared passion for music. It was an exciting time, especially for rock and metal. Grunge was taking over with bands like Pearl Jam and Nirvana, bringing raw emotion, melancholic melodies and deeply personal lyrics to the forefront.

Right in the middle of this musical revolution arrived Deftones with a sound unlike anything else. Their debut album, Adrenaline, immediately cemented their place in metal history. The record hit listeners like a force of nature. Stephen Carpenter's crushing, downtuned guitar riffs combined perfectly with Chino Moreno's vocals, shifting effortlessly between melodic and ferocious. Alongside KoЯn and Limp Bizkit, Deftones are widely regarded as pioneers of nu metal, laying the foundations for a genre that continues to inspire fans around the world.

Following a period of internal tensions and personal challenges during the late 2000s, the band reinvented themselves with Diamond Eyes (2010) and Koi No Yokan (2012). What does the White Pony artwork mean?

Released in June 2000, White Pony marked a major creative turning point for Deftones. The album expanded the band's sound beyond nu metal by incorporating elements of post-hardcore, trip hop, post-rock and progressive rock.

The wild white horse on the cover perfectly reflects this spirit of artistic freedom. Or does it?

Drummer Abe Cunningham once said in an interview that choosing the horse artwork was largely accidental. At the same time, the band have always preferred to leave the meaning behind their imagery open to interpretation. The horse can symbolise transformation, freedom or untamed creativity, but ultimately, its meaning is yours to decide.

How do I care for my Deftones T-shirts and hoodies?

Our Deftones T-shirts and hoodies are made from either cotton or a cotton-polyester blend to provide excellent comfort and durability. With the right care, you'll enjoy them for years to come.

• Washing: All Deftones clothing is machine washable. Use a mild detergent and wash at 30°C on a gentle cycle. Turn garments inside out before washing to help protect the print and minimise friction.
• Drying: We recommend air drying wherever possible. Tumble drying can damage printed designs, cause shrinkage and reduce the lifespan of the garment.
