It was 1992, in the middle of Düsseldorf. The two boys Sammy Amara and Andi Brügge wanted to make music and founded a band. Why is that special? Because the two were a tender 12 years old at the time and had no idea about music! They only knew that they wanted to make some and they knew what good music sounds like.

Just like those of their role models, the Sex Pistols or the Toten Hosen, for example. Fortunately, a lack of mastery of the instruments was the least noticeable in a punk band. After a second guitarist was found with Pascal Goßen and Ines Maybaum joined the band on bass, something like sound was recognizable for the first time.

They called themselves Broilers, which had less to do with a preference for fried chicken than with the attempt to put the "oi" of the Oi! scene in the name. With that, the boys (and of course the lady) were ready to go. So the first EP of the Broilers was released in 1997. This was followed by the first album, "Fackeln im Sturm". A fan base, mainly Oi! skinheads, formed. After the disc there was the first change in the line-up. Pascal vacated the place on the guitar for Michael Menke. Also favored by this change, the band slowly but surely developed from pure punk to a broader spectrum. Ska, reggae and rockabilly influences made themselves felt.

How the Broilers found their sound

In 2001, the second of the Broilers albums was released, "Verloser sehen anders aus". This was more similar to the group's newer albums. Die-hard Oi! punks couldn't do anything with it anymore, but a wider audience was addressed. The band seemed to be relatively indifferent to both. They simply made and always make the music they enjoy. However, after this record without Menke on the guitar. He left the band and was eventually replaced by Ronald Hübner.

Undeterred, the band continued its course towards diversity, their German-language lyrics were uncomfortable and, as usual with punk bands, put their finger in the middle of society's wound. This trend continued on the next CD "LoFi" in 2004. But the group gradually reached its limits. Many good ideas from the studio simply could not be implemented live without the appropriate guest musician and so Christian Kubczak was engaged. From 2005 he was responsible for keyboard and organ and thus decisively expanded the sound of the group.

Success arrives

Since then, a solid fan base has formed nationwide, and Broilers merchandise is also selling steadily. The next album "Vanitas" was released in 2007 under a new label and brought the band further attention. But they still preferred to play live. And from 2009 onwards, everyone was finally able to experience this: "The Anti Archives" contains two recorded concerts in Düsseldorf and Leipzig, a documentary about the band and tons of extras. From then on, her popularity skyrocketed. Already on the next tours it was no longer clubs, but halls. And they were full of fans who loved their sound.

The next album in 2011 – "Santa Muerte" – seemed to be inspired by this, which climbed to number 3 in the charts in Germany and reached gold status. They had made it and went one better. In 2012, the "Santa Muerte Live Tapes" were released. The year ended brilliantly with two sold-out concerts in Düsseldorf in front of 15,000 spectators.

Reached the top

Since then, the group, which in the early nineties wanted to play like Die Toten Hosen without any previous knowledge, has evolved. They played WITH them and other bands of their caliber. The big German festivals became standard, and singer Sammy in particular has a friendship with the Hosen. And they continued. In 2014, the next album "Noir" followed and really made an impact. Not only gold status, but also number 1 in the German album charts. The Broilers had reached the top and always remained true to themselves.

Not many bands can claim to have played only what they felt like playing in 20 years of history and to have such a success. Sammy later said in an interview about his joy at playing small concerts in clubs, where they sell out every hall in the republic: "That's the Broilers too.

And that will not change. I'll give you my word on that." Her next album followed in February 2017. It was called "(sic!)" and jumped back to 1st place. The story is far from over!
