How do you actually care for a leather bracelet?

Leather is a robust and at the same time very sensitive material. The wrong care or lack of care can rather harm your bracelet. So make sure that your leather bracelet gets regular breaks from wear, especially in summer. Sweat, water and sunscreen can damage the structure of the leather. You should also take it off when you sleep, so that it can dry in peace and quiet and virtually recover.

If you do need to clean it, make sure you only use a little water and leather soap to give it the best possible care. Real leather should never be cleaned with normal soap or extremely alkaline cleaning agents. The damage caused by this cannot be undone. After cleaning, never place it directly in the sun or use a heat source (heater or hairdryer) to dry it. The leather will dry out too much and then become brittle and stiff.

The right care - it depends on the material

But to find the right care method for your leather bracelet, you should pay attention to the material. Most leather bracelets are made of smooth leather, i.e. they have a smooth surface. Such bracelets are easy to care for and can be cleaned with a slightly damp cloth. If you want to use soap or other cleaning agents, you can test the leather strap in an inconspicuous place to see if it tolerates the agent. If it does not, you should never clean your bracelet with it. For leather, you can use so-called saddle soap.

In addition to smooth leather, there is also suede leather. These types of leather require different care than the easy-care smooth leathers. Rough leather has an open-pored surface structure that makes it particularly susceptible to greasy substances. Sunscreen is particularly harmful because it can penetrate the strap almost unhindered. But accordingly, you cannot treat your suede bracelet with leather grease. You can lightly brush the leather to clean it. But once the stain has soaked into the material, you can't get it out again.

Be careful not to overdo it!

Of course, you should take care of a leather strap. However, it is enough to treat your leather product with special leather care products every six months. If you care for it too much, you may damage the leather instead of preserving it. Genuine leather tends to become overgreasy. So make sure that you take care of your leather bracelet, but don't overdo it.

You can, however, safely use leather grease, leather spray or leather milk from time to time to prolong the life of your leather watch straps. This creates a protective film that protects your bracelet from dirt, moisture and sunlight. Apply a thin layer of the appropriate care product and then polish it off with a soft cloth. Leather bracelets do require a bit of work, but it's definitely worth it!

Can you actually make leather bracelets tighter?

Damp leather contracts when it dries. However, it then also becomes hard and brittle. Leather and water are not friends, and if you want to enjoy your leather bracelet for a long time, you should avoid this type of shrinking at all costs. However, if you have a leather bracelet with a buckle, you can pierce another hole in the bracelet with a thick needle to make it smaller or tighter.

However, leather bracelets will eventually stretch when worn and this is both intentional and unavoidable. Therefore, if possible, you should make sure that the bracelet fits perfectly when you buy it. Should you ever want to tighten your favourite leather bracelet, you should definitely go to a specialist or jeweller. The risk of irrevocably breaking your leather bracelet is far too great. But enough reading now. Take a look around our large EMP leather bracelets online shop and find cheap leather bracelets to suit your taste.

Leather bracelets are very popular in many circles. Whether gothic fans, metal fans or dark romance, leather bracelets are very common. Bikers also like to wear leather bracelets decorated with studs. Due to its naturalness, leather is very supple and comfortable to wear – many wearers of leather jewellery even don't take it off at all. This is because leather becomes softer and softer through constant wear, acquires a slight abrasion and shine and, depending on the quality, even tolerates contact with water.

A worn leather strap exudes a certain casualness that cannot be achieved with any other material. In addition, the natural material leather is ideal for allergy sufferers, as it does not contain nickel or similar materials that make jewellery a pain. A little caution should be exercised with bracelets that have metal attachments, rivets or eyelets. Very sensitive people may have problems here. However, a layer of clear varnish on top of the metal often helps, as this avoids direct skin contact.

Tips for leather bracelets

Leather is a natural material that expands slightly when worn. This effect is intended and desired. Therefore, a bracelet should never be bought too wide. If you have to close the bracelet on the last clasp, you can stretch it so much by wearing it all the time that it will eventually be too big. That's why a leather bracelet should be a little tight. It is ideal if there are several press studs or holes for adjusting the buckle. This way the bracelet can be individually adjusted. Depending on the type of leather, it will develop its own patina over time.

Water-repellent leather can be recognised by the fact that a drop of water rolls off, whereas absorbent leather absorbs the drop immediately. Dark leather, where the surface is coloured, is much more robust. Nevertheless, leather wristbands should be removed before coming into contact with water. Even water-repellent leather has small spots where water can penetrate and swell the fibres.

A leather strap should also be taken off during particularly sweaty activities. This is because leather takes on the smell of sweat and can become unpleasant over time. There is a kind of deodorant available in watch shops that can neutralise these odours. If nothing else helps, you can also rub the strap with a little mild hydrogen peroxide. However, you have to be very careful so that the glue does not dissolve. Otherwise, you can always find great offers for a new bracelet in the EMP Online Shop.
